Description

Cardanol is a bio‑based phenolic compound obtained by refining cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), a non‑edible agricultural by‑product of cashew processing. It is a pale yellow oily liquid , Owing to its renewable origin, high thermal stability, natural lubricity, and antioxidant properties, cardanol has gained attention as a sustainable feedstock and performance additive for renewable fuels, especially HVO (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil) and SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel).

Key Properties for Fuel Applications

  • Renewable & low carbon footprint: Derived from waste biomass; reduces lifecycle GHG emissions. Providing excellent thermal stability and chemical reactivity
  • High thermal & oxidative stability: Improves storage stability and resists degradation at high temperatures.
  • Natural lubricity: Enhances fuel lubrication, protecting pumps and injectors.
  • Good hydrocarbon compatibility: Long alkyl chain ensures miscibility with paraffinic HVO/SAF.
  • Antioxidant effect: Inhibits oxidation and gum formation during long‑term storage.

Application in HVO (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil)

HVO is a drop‑in renewable diesel produced via hydrotreating of vegetable oils, animal fats, or waste lipids. Cardanol is used in HVO in two main ways:

As a blending feedstock (pre‑hydrogenation):

Cardanol can be co‑processed with vegetable oils in hydrotreatment units. Under hydrogenation conditions, its phenolic ring and unsaturated side chain are converted into long‑chain paraffins, which integrate into the HVO pool. This increases renewable content and diversifies feedstock sources, reducing reliance on food‑grade oils.

As a performance additive (post‑blending):

Low doses of cardanol are added to finished HVO to:

Improve lubricity for modern low‑sulfur HVO.

Boost oxidative stability, extending storage life.

Reduce corrosion in fuel systems.

Application in SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel)

SAF is a critical pathway for decarbonizing aviation. Cardanol contributes to SAF production as follows:

Feedstock for paraffinic SAF pathways:

Cardanol can be hydrodeoxygenated (HDO) and hydrocracked to produce jet‑range paraffins. These paraffins meet the ASTM D7566 / DEF STAN 91‑91 specifications for paraffinic SAF, offering a drop‑in solution for existing aircraft and infrastructure.

Stability & lubricity additive for SAF blends:

Cardanol acts as a multi‑functional additive to:

Restore lubricity in aromatic‑lean SAF.

Enhance thermal stability at jet engine operating temperatures.

Provide anti‑oxidant and anti‑corrosion protection in fuel tanks and pipelines.

Processing Flexibility:
  • Can be used directly in certain applications
  • Serves as feedstock for producing refined CNSL and derivatives
  • Compatible with existing industrial equipment and processes

Conclusion

Cardanol is a versatile, renewable bio‑chemical that serves as both a feedstock and a high‑performance additive for HVO and SAF. Its unique combination of renewable origin, lubricity, and stability makes it a valuable tool for decarbonizing road transport and aviation while improving fuel quality and system reliability.
